Edge-emitting photonic crystal double-heterostructure nanocavity lasers with InAs quantum dot active material.
We report what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first demonstration of an edge-emitting photonic crystal nanocavity laser that is integrated with a photonic crystal waveguide. This demonstration is achieved with a double-heterostructure photonic crystal nanocavity incorporating an InAs quantum dot active region.

We combine photonic and electronic band structure engineering to create a surface-emitting quantum cascade microcavity laser. A high-index contrast two-dimensional photonic crystal is used to form a micro-resonator that simultaneously provides feedback for laser action and diffracts light vertically from the surface of the semiconductor surface. A top metallic contact allows electrical current ...
متن کاملTwo-Dimensional Photonic Crystal Confined Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers
The two-dimensional photonic crystal (2-D PhC) structure has been investigated as a method for lateral mode control of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). The 2-D PhC structures were designed using an equivalent index model developed for photonic crystal fibers combined with a plane wave expansion method. The etching depth dependence of the PhC structure was incorporated for the f...

Photonic crystal surface emitting lasers (PCSELs) [1] offer the ultimate in control in semiconductor lasers. PCSELs have been shown to have high power scaling with area, high single-mode powers [2], large scale coherent emission, control of the beam shape and polarization with design of the photonic crystal geometry [3,4], as well as beam steering [5]. The photonic crystal, a two-dimensional va...
متن کاملMid-Infrared Surface-Emitting Two Dimensional Photonic Crystal Semiconductor Lasers
The mid-infrared (mid-IR) region, covering the electromagnetic spectrum from about 2.5 to 25 ┤m wavelength, is of unique interest for many applications, especially for molecular spectroscopy, because the vibrational frequencies of almost all target molecules and hydrocarbons are in this spectral region, such as NO, NO2, CO, CO2, HF, and CH4. The specific application areas for molecular spectros...
